Our founder, Chip Mitchell, is a Rome native. He grew up in the historic Avenue A neighborhood and lived there for his first thirty years, fixing up a few of its houses along the way. He went to Elm Street Elementary, and he was in the first class to go all the way through the new Rome Middle School and Rome High School after East and West Rome merged. For college, he went seven red lights away, to Shorter.
He stayed at Shorter a long time after that, starting in Institutional Advancement as a gift accountant and working up to Director of Alumni Relations and Development. He was there when Shorter College became Shorter University, and he later served as president of the alumni association. Getting Set Up in Rome
If your business is inside the Rome city limits, the license comes from City Hall on Broad Street — the building with the Romulus and Remus statue out front. Two sign-offs come before the license issues. Zoning has to confirm your business is allowed at the address you picked, and the fire marshal inspects the space. That inspection is not a formality: exit signs may mean hiring an electrician to wire them in. One thing that's genuinely cheap — posting a sign that the restrooms aren't public changes some of what the fire marshal has to check. Worth knowing before you sign a lease, not after.
